Historic Philadelphia Tour Group Celebrates 40th Anniversary

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Next Friday marks the 40th anniversary of the Friends of the Independence Park Twilight Tours. The free tours begin at 6 p.m. and run through Labor Day.

Philadelphia is filled with stories from the past, ranging from historic figures to wide spread outbreaks like the yellow fever epidemic in colonial times. Maiti Gallen, with the Friends of Independence Park, says the free tours fill tourists and residents in on those historic events, along with an overview of the park.

"What everyone will get is a free walking tour of the national park here. Tour guides are trained and each creates their own tour, so each tour is very unique, and you could take the tour different times of the summer and you might not hear the same information twice."

The tours begin June 15th, each one originating at the Signer's Garden at 5th and Chestnut Streets. The tours begin at 6 p.m. The Friends will also be offering a Founding Father's Fitness Stroll on June 17th, Father's Day.
