5-Year-Old Calls Police After Father Reportedly Overdoses On Heroin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A five-year-old girl called police after her father passed out from an alleged heroin overdose in a Delaware County home on Wednesday.

Officer Christopher Karr, Jr. responded to a home in the 4000 block of Vernon Road in Drexel Hill at about 9:30 p.m. Authorities say, a child called 9-1-1 and reported that her father would not wake up and there were no other adults in the home. She also reported her father, who was in the basement, fell down off a chair and had blood on the side of his eye.

Officer Karr, Jr. arrived at the home to find the child waiting at the front door. The officer then found 31-year-old Jason Ferranti laying on his back on the floor with syringes, a bent spoon, baggies and waxed paper nearby, all typically used to inject heroin, according to authorities.

The officer asked Ferranti how much heroin he had done and he reportedly stated "Not much, just a $5 bag". Ferranti was arrested and faces charges.

The drug paraphernalia was gathered and placed into evidence. Officers checked the residence and determined there was no one else in the home.

The child has been placed in her grandmother's custody.
