Memorial Day Safety Tips

By Nan Talleno

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This Memorial Day weekend, many people will be celebrating the start of the summer season with picnics, barbecues and get-togethers. The ASPCA recommends keeping your pets indoors; it's safer, quieter and much easier for both you and your dog. But if you're heading out and planning to take your dog with you, here are several safety ideas to keep in mind.

When driving, keep your dog safe with a car safety harness for traveling. Always provide fresh water frequently during your trip and (throughout the day!) and make frequent stops for your dog along the way.

No matter how tempting, never offer your dog the picnic "people" food as it would greatly upset his/her stomach. Keep your dog on the regular diet and keep the walk schedule as usual.

Never use insect repellent made specifically for humans on pets. It's not intended for animal use and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and drooling.

Always provide shade as dogs, just like people, can suffer from heatstroke and exhaustion.

Never leave your dog in the car unattended, even for just a short time and even with the windows open.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend for all!
