Friends, Family Remember Radio Host Found Murdered In NJ Home

By Robin Rieger

LINWOOD, N.J. (CBS) - Saying goodbye to a woman many loved, admired and appreciated was heartbreaking for family and friends at April Kauffman's funeral on Monday.

The local shore radio personality and businesswoman was found murdered on Thursday in the bedroom of the Linwood home she shared with her husband Dr. James Kauffman. Police say she had been shot multiple times.

"She raised a great daughter Kimberly and she loved those two grandsons," said friend Bridget Gaffney.

"I hope they catch whoever did this," said Rosanne Finley.

"I think everyone is just wondering what happened," said Arthur gropper, known as King Arthur Gropper on his WIBG 1020 am radio show. He says Kauffman was his co-host Wednesday afternoons. The station re-aired last Wednesday's show in her memory.

"Wednesday at 4 p.m. I said goodbye to her. I was on the air Thursday when news started to break and I'm just devastated," said Gropper

At the service in Margate, and at the cemetery in Egg Harbor, veterans spoke of Kauffman's tireless efforts on their behalf.

"She was an inspiration to everybody," said Andrew Marlson from Sons of the American Legion.

A worker at the home who made the discovery called police around 11:30 a.m. The type of gun used and whether it was recovered has not been revealed. A friend says the Kauffmans have a gun collection, but it's not known if any are missing.

Defense attorney Ed Jacobs says Dr. Kauffman retained him to get through the investigation. Jacobs says its part of the investigation to talk to those closest to the victim and that Dr. Kauffman has been interviewed and continues to cooperate.
