More Parents Staying Home Rather Than Putting Children In Day Care

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Many American families are weighing the pros and cons of having one partner stay at home to raise the children, versus both adults working full time. There are a growing number of moms who are choosing to stay home with their children. Two local professionals who are also moms say they are not surprised.

Anna Sachs is a CPA at Savran Benson, LLP in Bala Cynwyd and a mom to a year and a half old son. She's not surprised.

"Gas prices are on the rise, you wind up eating lunch out during the day, grabbing a cup of coffee. All of those expenses add up. When you look at your take-home pay after taxes versus child care and all those other costs, it may just pay to stay at home."

For Katie Orlando, there was no question she would stay home with her now 17-month-old Julia, but she says she definitely took everything into consideration: "The logistics of commuting. I see people struggle every day and quality of life for us. We live in the Fitler Square neighborhood and my husband works on Market Street in Center City so he walks to work."
