Giveaways And Special Releases Planned For Record Store Day

By Molly Daly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This Saturday, music fans will flock to independent record stores to snap up limited edition special releases -- many on vinyl -- from artists ranging from Abba to Widespread Panic. The collector's editions and live performances are all part of Record Store Day.

It's intended to celebrate the art of music, and boost that cathedral of music geekitude and encyclopedic knowledge: the indy record store, especially in a time of cheap and easy downloads.

"The idea was to help save the brick and mortar stores like ourselves, because of the changes the industry's gone through," says Pat Feeney, who owns Music on Main in Manayunk.

He says, since its start in 2008, Record Store Day has mushroomed.

"Last year in the pouring rain there was a line of people outside, because the quantities are very limited on everything."

And, because it's a place for music fans to be with their people.

"It's a real good meeting place. It's almost like our own version of the Trekkies, when they have conventions. They have a Big Lebowski-fest, or something like that. It just seems like it's our day for like-minded people to gather. And it doesn't hurt that it helps pay the bills, either."
