Suspect Arrested In Violent Attack, Robbery Of 94-Year-Old Woman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia police have arrested a suspect who was caught on tape violently attacking and robbing a 94-year-old woman on Easter Sunday.

Antonio Santiago, 29, was arrested over the weekend and is facing several charges.

According to investigators, Santiago is the man caught on surveillance tape violently attacking and robbing an elderly woman as she walked home from a grocery store in Northeast Philadelphia.

The incident happened Easter Sunday around 2:10 p.m. near the 8300 block of Loretto Avenue.

The 94-year-old victim was walking home from the Bells Corner Supermarket when an unknown male began following her. The suspect then approached the woman from behind and grabbed her purse, knocking her to the ground, before fleeing the scene.

"This is a 94-year-old woman. She's barely 4-feet 8-inches and he's 6 feet tall. He comes up from behind her, grabs her purse, breaks her arm and she has some internal bleeding. It's tragic," says Lt. Ray Evers of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Santiago, of Philadelphia, is facing several charges including aggravated assault, robbery, simple assault, reckless endangerment, receiving stolen property and theft.

He is being held on $200,000 bail. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 1st.
