Key Pa. Lawmaker Sees At Least Some Social Service Funding Cuts Restored

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - The chairman of the state House appropriations committee says he expects there will be a reduction in major cuts for adults with disabilities and other social service programs in Governor Corbett's proposed budget.

Last week, advocates for the disabled like Susie Brenner came to the capitol.

She spoke about her 22-year-old autistic son, "He will never, never be able to live alone. And that's what scares us. Someone will have to be with him 24/7. Because he can't communicate, and he can't pay bills, and he can't advocate for himself."

Two Republican lawmakers spoke out at the news conference against the cuts and on Friday, Delaware County Republican Bill Adolph, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, told a breakfast meeting of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce that at least some of the proposed cuts to social service funding will be mitigated.

"Absolutely, there's going to have to be some restoration. I don't know exactly the numbers."

Top lawmakers have already signaled that for a second year in a row, they will try to reduce proposed cuts for higher education.
