Second Week In A Row On Top For 'The Lorax'

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Dr. Seuss still has the juice.

The animated attraction, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, made it two weekends in a row on top of the box-office heap, earning an estimated $39-million in its second weekend of release for another first-place finish.

That kept it well ahead of the weekend's three new mainstream offerings.

The new science fiction adventure, John Carter, debuted in second place.  But given its extravagant budget, its $31-million debut weekend goes in the books as somewhat of a box-office disappointment.

The debuting real-time horror thriller, Silent House, placed fourth with $7-million, behind the third-place holdover, Project X, which took in $12-million.

And the Eddie Murphy comedy, A Thousand Words, totaled $6-million, good for sixth place.

Overall, industry-wide box office was down from last weekend, but -- continuing a 2012 trend -- ahead of last year's pace.
