New Website Lets You Rent Out Your Own Car

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Move over, car rental and corporate car-sharing. There's now a nationwide network of individuals willing to let you rent their personal vehicle.

RelayRides.com is the home page for this web-based peer-to-peer car-sharing effort. RelayRides founder Shelby Clark says they have two years experience doing trial runs in Boston and San Francisco, connecting people with wheels to rent with people who need them for a while.

You set the price for your vehicle; Relay Rides acts as middleman, processing the transaction and providing insurance for the renter.

"It actually took us a year and a half to get our insurance policy. We actually worked with a broker right there in Philly, Bill Curtis at Porter and Curtis who moved mountains to help us to get this insurance policy nailed down."

He says, the word got out, "And over the past two years, literally thousands of people around the country have signed up for RelayRides, sort of pre-enrolled their car, including a bunch of people from Philly but it wasn't available in their area yet. So, it's really exciting to stop saying 'no' and start saying 'yes' to these people."

As of Monday afternoon, there weren't any Philly cars listed on the website.
