Runners Of Fairmount Half-Marathon Can Refuel With...Beer?

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's not your typical post-race beverage, but this half-marathon is not your typical race.

The ODDessey Half Marathon in Fairmount Park in May is all about having fun.

"Last year at mile-marker number nine, at the water stop, there was an option for some of the runners to engage in a water fight, instead of getting cups of water," says race director Carl Ewald.

He also says research from a university in Spain finds that a pint of beer is better at rehydrating the body than water, so the race has signed on Sly Fox Brewing Company out of Phoenixville to offer their post-race beverage.

"Our medals actually have a beer opener built into them. You get your free pint glass with the ODDessey logo on it to commemorate your achievement, and you can wander into the beer garden which lines the finish line, so you can have a beer and cheer all the other runners as they come in."

And runners can pick which Sly Fox beer they like best with free samples being offered at the ODDessey Booth at the Endurance Sports Expo later this month.
