Report: Statins Benefit Women Same As Men

By Dr. Brian McDonough

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - According to a new report in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, women can have just as much benefit by taking statin drugs as men.

We've known for years that statins can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke in men but not enough studies were done in women. According to this new report they looked at data from over 141,000 patients in 18 high quality studies to take a look at the role of statins in women.

Essentially, the authors could not find a significant difference the response between men and women. This is excellent news because it shows that statin drugs benefit both sexes equally.
