Deadline Approaching For New Jersey Schools To Move Election Day

By David Madden

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - New Jersey education officials say school districts wishing to take advantage of a new law allowing them to move their annual elections from spring to fall had better get a move on.

The new law allows towns to save money by, in effect, eliminating that separate spring vote. And many towns have sought advice on how to do it, prompting the Education Department to send out a memo to every school board in the state.

"A school board or a governing authority would have to actively vote 'yes, we want to move our election from April till November.' And we suggest they do that by February 17th."

Education Department spokesman Justin Barra says that's three weeks from today. Not a hard deadline, mind you, but it should avoid any conflicts with dates connected with an April vote.

Once approved, a board need only file notice with a county clerk. Another thing, you won't be voting on budgets anymore, unless those plans exceed the two percent state cap on tax or spending increases.
