Report: Jay Paterno Likely To Give Joe Paterno's Eulogy

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (PA) -- Though the final months of his life were shrouded by controversy, his private funeral today and public memorial tomorrow promise to celebrate the many years of great achievements by Joe Paterno.

Bernard Fernandez of the Philadelphia Daily News said that Jay Paterno will most likely give Paterno's eulogy. "Jay was not terrifically popular as a quarterbacks coach under his father, but he was very close to him obviously," he said. Fernandez called 94 WIP's Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team today to talk about the scene in State College, PA. Jay Paterno was a Penn State coach from 1999 until January of this year, when new Head Coach Bill O'Brien was hired.

Fernandez said that although he expects Jay Paterno to give the eulogy, he also expects many others to speak.

Though people are coming together to celebrate Joe Paterno's life, the scene at State College is hardly a party. "I would contrast this to the funeral of Joe Frazier," Fernandez said. "Of the 3,500 people who came out for that, they were smiling and dancing and celebrating a life. That's not the case here, there's a lot of tears and a lot of sniffles."

The private funeral is today, and the public memorial service is Thursday at 2pm and can be streamed live at CBSPhilly.com.
