Mummers Raise Money For Local Food Banks

By David Madden

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The long and often rowdy Comics portion of the Mummers Parade can feature some pretty bizarre performances. One brigade marching up Broad Street Sunday will not only be having some fun but raising some money for charity at the same time.

Ever want to dress up as an octopus or some other sea creature? Well, Halloween may have been two months ago, but the Golden Schleppers will be doing just that.

They're part of the Murray Comic Club and there are several South Jersey public servants involved, including Camden County Freeholder Jeffrey Nash. The theme is "Octopi Broad Street". A bit of a stretch, to be sure, but they're doing it for charity.

"The fee is $35 for adults, $10 for children. To be in the parade, the cost is really nominal so the money, in large measure, will go to the food banks."

Nash figures he'll raise a couple thousands dollars for the charities.
