Half Marathon Director Says Run Your Way To Good Health in 2012

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If your New year's resolution involves getting in shape, the director of a spring-time half-marathon says, why not think about running? The ODDyssey half-marathon is a 13.1 mile race through Fairmount park near the end of May, and race director Carl Ewald says, even if you're not a runner now, you can be ready for that race, or for the 10-mile Broad Street run that same month, if you start preparing now.

Step one: Sign up for a race.

"It sounds counter-intuitive to sign up for a race before you're actually trained for it, but the motivational factor can't be beat," ODDessey race director Carl Ewald says.

Step two: Make a plan and stick to it.

"A lot of people will go out there and think that they can just run, but it's a process," Ewald says it's a gradual process to avoid injury.

His recommendation is to join a running club to help make the plan and to help stick to it. And one of the most important steps, he says, is getting the right equipment, he recommends skipping the big-box sports stores, and visit a small shop to get the best advice.
