High-Tech Mentoring Programs Links Professionals With Students

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The What It Takes Foundation holds forums where professional African American men teach inner city boys what it takes to be successful. The group is using a tech-savvy way to create a mentoring program.

The group uses social media to connect 200 Black professional men with 200 ninth graders.

"One out of three students will not finish the ninth grade, which is actually staggering," organization founder Anthony Martin says.

The goal, he says, is to keep inner-city boys interested in school so they can strive for success.

"They are looking for ways to be successful in their lives. And they actually have to be motivated to do different things."

Martin says mentors will communicate with their student through ICouldBe.org. The pair will work on projects that teach life skills. For more info on how to become an e-mentor or on the What It Takes Forum scheduled for December 20th, go to WhatItTakes.me.
