Eagles Defenseman Tackles Job Skills For Homeless
By Steve Tawa
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An Eagles defensive end tackled a big issue yesterday at the Chosen 300 Outreach Center on Spring Garden Street: how to help the homeless find jobs.
#55 Darryl Tapp's motivational speech was centered on teaching the homeless guests how to complete their resumes, and build interview skills. He did so by example, outlining his own experiences. Take the now 6'1" 270-pound Tapp's freshman year in high school, when he didn't make any of the teams he tried out for.
"I got cut from every team. I got cut from basketball, the football team, track, and the wrestling squad. (laughs)."
Chosen 300 Executive Director Brian Jenkins holds a learning lunch the first Tuesday of every month, during which the homeless can sit down at a bank of computers and put their new skills into use.
"How to acces the Internet, and how to create an email address. if you don't have one, there's no way for potential employers to contact you."
He says it's an important step toward self-sufficiency, "75% of all positions are now on line."
