3-On Your Side: Get My Groceries

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Did Thanksgiving grocery shopping drive you crazy?

The crowds, long lines. Well 3 On Your Side consumer reporter Jim Donovan found a new shopping alternative that's convenient and guaranteed to save you time.

The last thing Shannon Thomson wants to do is go food shopping.

"Dragging the kids to the supermarket with me. I'm in there for at least an hour on top of it takes me at least 15 20 minutes to get there," said Thomson.

But with a new company called Peapod by Giant, Shannon can shop and never leave home!

"You go on line. You place your order. You set your delivery time and then we deliver it upon your convenience," said Elana Margolis with Peapod.

Your order doesn't come from a local store, it starts at a huge warehouse in Maryland.

The cost-- $9.95 for orders between $60 and $100.

$7.95 for orders over a $100.

So what kind of shape will your groceries be in after a 100 mile trip?

"I bet you Jim, your ice cream is going to be rock solid, more rock solid than if you went to your local grocery store and that is because we have perfected our stay fresh delivery system," said Margolis.

3 On Your side asked Shannon to try it out.

First, you place the order. With some things you can be specific.

"Shopping is a very personal thing. We do offer a few convenience like you can get green bananas or yellow bananas," said Margolis.

"I did it at my own pace and at my own, you know and it was easy. I found what I was looking for," said Thomson.

Days later the order arrived on time in temperature controlled totes.

When we checked everything out it appeared to be in good shape.

Even the Shannon's bananas looked good.

"Wow, this is what I would pick if I picked them myself from the supermarket. No bruising," said Thomson.

And what about that ice cream? It made it all the way from Maryland and the frost was still on it.

"I don't think I could have got it home with the frost on it still," said Thomson.

Frozen ice cream and a solid experience!

"I definitely will be doing that again," said Thomson.

Peapod is offering a deal right now. After your first order, delivery charges are waived for any additional orders over the next 60 days. The company does accept manufacturers coupons. Right now, Peapod is in Philadelphia, Montgomery, and Delaware counties and expects to expand to other areas.
