Basketball: Temple Defeats W. Michigan, 69-55, in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Temple jumped out to a 23-6 lead, defeating Western Michigan 69-55 on Thursday morning.

The Owls (2-0) were led by Ramon Moore's 15, but all five starters were in double figures.  Michael Eric had 12 points and 15 rebounds, and Juan Fernandez added 14 points with six assists.

Matt Stainbrook led Western Michigan (0-2) with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Flenard Whitfield added 11 points. But starting guards Demetrius Ward and Mike Douglas were a combined 1 for 15 from the field.

As a team, the Broncos made seven of 30 shots in the first half (23.3 percent) and were three for 14 from three-point range in the game, at the "5-Hour Energy Puerto Rico Tip-Off."

After the win, KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Temple head coach Fran Dunphy from San Juan to get his thoughts on how his team played.

Temple scored the game's first nine points, led by 17 before the midway point of the first half, and held a 37-21 lead at halftime.
