Ladies Roll Up Their Sleeves, Learn About Car Maintenance

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A unique car care class was held Saturday afternoon in a South Philadelphia garage, strictly for women only. The ladies learned how to change a tire, check fluids and how to change wiper blades, among many other things.

Owner of "Ladies, Start Your Engines," Lori Johnson, travels the country teaching the two-hour class.

"Well, I try to help them understand a little more about their vehicle and give them the language they need to talk to their service people."

Johnson told the class, "Next time you go to get your tires done, just say, 'What do you torque those tires to?' And watch the look on their face!"

"I know words like 'distributor cap' and 'carburetor,' which really don't help," says Druanne Martin, who travelled from Elkins Park to attend the class. "I don't know what they are but...."

Reporter: "What do you hope to learn?"

Druanne: "How to change a tire! It would be so helpful to know what to do if AAA is going to be two hours."

After the class, Martin said, "Oh I think it's great. It's more than I ever thought I'd learn!"
