Celebrate: Thursday Is 'National Sandwich Day'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Thursday is National Sandwich Day and Philadelphia is celebrating today with a hoagie competition at the Shops at Liberty Place.

Philadelphia City Councilman James Kenney has some fighting words for the cheesesteak.

"I've always contended that a hoagie is a much more Philadelphia-based sandwich than the cheesesteak, actually."

He says the hoagie has an older legacy here.

"The people who worked at Hog Island down in South Philly would take these sandwiches from home to eat at lunch and they became instead of 'hogies' they became 'hoagies.' That was back in the 20's."

Kenney says his favorite is the Italian hoagie, but he likes to mix it up sometimes.

"I like a turkey hoagie myself. Just oil, no mayo. Actually a Jewish hoagie's not bad either with the corned beef."
