New Jersey College Student Killed In Crash On Campus

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) -- Authorities say a Richard Stockton College student died in a motor vehicle crash on campus one day before his birthday.

Joseph Miller of Medford would have turned 22 on Wednesday.

Authorities say fellow student Joao Simoes, 21, was behind the wheel of the car as it travelled along Vera King Farris Drive.

Shortly after 9:30 pm the car struck a deer and then careened out of control, slamming into nearby trees. Miller was killed and Simoes suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Atlantic County Prosecutors office, along with police, is investigating the crash.

Though some students saw the accident scene, many did not learn the details until the following day. Many said they were not surprised because deer are often spotted on the campus grounds, which is located near the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

College officials said, councilors would be made available on Wednesday for students who feel they need support.
