Child, 9, Driving Car Critically Injured In Crash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- According to Philadelphia police, a 9-year-old boy took his parents car for a joy ride on Sunday morning without their knowledge and ended up crashing the car on the Roosevelt Boulevard.

Police said it happened shortly after 9 a.m. The boy took the family's 1999 Chevy Malibu and was driving north on the boulevard's outer lanes, when he lost control. The vehicle struck a tree, flipped over twice, but the boy was not ejected.

Police said the boy suffered head and leg injuries and was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. He was listed in critical but stable condition and was expected to be fine in the long run.

There were no charges immediately filed. The investigation was continuing by officers in the Accident Investigation Unit.
