PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Eastern State Penitentiary historic site in the Fairmount section is getting ready to celebrate its 20th Halloween season with the biggest fundraiser of the year. “Terror Behind the Walls” opens its gates later this week with a new look.

Final preparations are underway for this year’s “Terror Behind the Walls” with six scare zones.  Jason Ohlsen is in charge of designing and building the haunted attraction.

“We have been working non-stop. We finished the design back in February and we had a crew of very skilled laborers that started in mid-May. They have been working full weeks ever since.”

He says this year “The Gauntlet” replaces the “Intake” attraction in the first zone and a sixth space was added at the end: “Break Out.”

“It’s not like the rest of the attractions, where you follow a maze. This is a wide open space with lots of huge props and lots and lots of actors that interact with the group.”

“The inmates are going to be running wild. They are going to try and use the visitors for escape.”

Next Tuesday at 11 a.m., the public is invited for a celebration as the two giant gargoyles Frank and Carson are hoisted to their perches outside Eastern State Penitentiary. The box office officially opens then. Terror Behind The Walls opens on September 23rd.
