New LED Display Lights Up Race Street Near Delaware River
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - PennDOT this week gave the green light for an art installation designed to help unite the Delaware River with the waterfront neighborhood.
Soon, drivers and walkers heading to the river on Race Street, just past 2nd, will get a sneak peek at what's ahead:
"It's an LED screen that will be displaying a live video feed of the surface of the Delaware River."
City public art director Margot Berg says it's 60 feet wide and four feet high and gets content from a camera on the pier. Local artist Richard Torchia is the designer, in collaboration with Greenhouse Media. It'll be installed in the coming weeks on the I-95 overpass, and more screens could be in the works.
On the sidewalk below, tall, metal mesh panels line the south side of Race:
"To create additional light in the underpass where, right now, it tends to be very dark and not very inviting."
Spotlights shine the way toward the Race Street Pier park, which opened in May. Words on the panels direct you toward CITY or RIVER and also provide a history lesson, of sorts, by noting high-water marks.
