The Help Wins A Slow Week At The Box Office
by Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The weather was only part of the reason why it was a slow weekend at the box office. East coast weather worries helped to make this the slowest box-office weekend since early February.
The Help, helped also by the lack of strong competition, that helped itself to a second straight first-place finish at the box office. In its third weekend of release, the racially-themed drama earned an estimated $14-million, putting it ahead of the three new releases.
Second place went to the debuting action thriller, Colombiana, with Zoe Saltana, which took in $10-million. The horror thriller, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, was third with $9-million, while the comedy, Our Idiot Brother, starring Paul Rudd, took fourth with $7-million.
Overall, The Help is the one bright spot on the characteristically modest late-summer box office landscape.
