Hurricane Irene Playing Havoc With North Atlantic Vacation Ship Cruises

HATBORO, Pa. (CBS) - Hurricane Irene is making life difficult for the cruise ship industry and its passengers.

There have been more than a dozen itinerary changes for cruise ships in the Caribbean this week, and more are likely to come as Irene moves up the east coast.

At Ventresca Travel in Hatboro, Pa., travel agent Marie Sczypiorski says she's heard from a group that had its cruise cut short.

"We have some clients that are doing a Bermuda itinerary with Celebrity Cruises. They were due to come back to Bayonne, New Jersey on Sunday. Because of the hurricane, the cruise line is actually cutting a day off the itinerary," she said.

And Sczypiorski says some ships will skirt the hurricane by staying out at sea an extra day. Others may not make it out of port this weekend.

It all spells upheaval for vacationers, many of whom booked their cruises months ago.
