South African Orange Growers Celebrate Latest Deliveries To U.S.

GLOUCESTER CITY, N.J. (CBS) - The South African ambassador to the US was among the dignitaries who turned out at the Holt Marine Terminal in South Jersey yesterday to mark the arrival of another big shipment of South African citrus fruit.

This was one of eleven shipments that will come in from South Africa this year, and Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool is hoping that number will expand.

"We could supply even more to the US market if we were able to go over the whole country and if we were able to go over the whole of southern Africa," he told KYW Newsradio.  "The potential is there to supply this market in a tremendous way."

So why the celebration?

"We had a big growth year, and the consumers of this country like our fruit and they want to buy it, and this is part of our strategy to enlarge our presence here," said Gerrit van der Merwe, chairman of the Western Cape Producers Forum.

South Africa's citrus export season runs from June through October.
