Reducing Cholesterol

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you are trying to reduce your cholesterol and triglycerides it is quite easy to say that it is important to watch your diet. But what are the things that you can do to make a real difference?

There are several things to do.

The first is to reduce the intake of saturated and trans fats. You can increase the intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Another great idea is to increase tree nuts and soy in the diet.

You won't want to hear this but alcohol should be limited to one to two drinks at most per day. Omega three fatty acids are an important part of the battle against high cholesterol.

The Mediterranean diet is based on grains, cooking with olive oil and a reduction in red meat.

One other major point is to try and increase the amount of aerobic exercise in your day. It is not easy but it can work quite well.

Of course there are some people who have greater problems and for those who can't lower cholesterol with diet and exercise medication may be necessary.
