Corbett Ponders Privatizing State Park Services, Prison Health Care

HARRISBURG (CBS) - Governor Corbett cites state park operations as an example of the state assets and services that might be candidates for privatization.

The focus right now is on privatizing liquor sales in Pennsylvania, but Governor Corbett is about to empanel another commission, this one to study other state assets or functions that could be privatized. During a press conference on Thursday, the governor offered state park services as one example.

"There are some places where we don't have lifeguards in state parks. If we privatize that, took a little bit of money and privatize that, could we have the lifeguards there?"

The governor says he would like to see lifeguards at state parks at least during the summer season, since he was once a lifeguard himself.

The governor also wonders if savings might be found by privatizing some prison health care services. Corbett is not keen on an idea of leasing the turnpike which was favored by his predecessor Ed Rendell.
