Pennsylvania Woman Who Hid Baby Remains Gets 20-40 Years

READING, Pa. (AP) -- A Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder in connection with the deaths of five newborns whose skeletal remains were found at her home.

Forty-five-year-old Michele Kalina pleaded guilty to one-count of third-degree murder in a Reading courtroom Thursday. She also pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse and concealing the death of a child.

The defense says Kalina was abused by her father as a child.

The hearing comes a year after her teen daughter found the remains in a locked closet.

Authorities say DNA tests show most, if not all, of the five babies were conceived through a longtime affair with a co-worker. Neither he nor Kalina's husband knew about the pregnancies.
