In A Heat Wave, Fashion Goes The Way Of Mittens And Scarves

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - With last week's oppressive heat wave and the lingering high temps, the rules of fashion go out the window. KYW Newsradio's Hadas Kuznits set out to learn what makes people's fashion sense burn up in the heat in Philadelphia.

"Philly is a fashion town, but fashion means nothing with this heat," one man says. And that seems to be the consensus.

Woman: "Layer on the powder and deodorant!"
Kuznits: "Deodorant's a big fashion accessory."
Woman: "You have to have deodorant!"

These folks cite the biggest fashion violations they've seen around the city.

"Violations are guys that feel that they can wear just shorts and no shirt.  It doesn't matter how ripped you are, but they'll wear it halfway on, halfway off!"

"What you see on the subway is a different universe! The cut off shorts that just don't fit!"

"They got the short shorts on, any color, they don't care!  It's hot!  It's burning up!"

Many people say the skimpy attire can be attractive, but not always.

"When they have the fountains going and people think 'Oh! This is like a swimming pool but I don't have a bathing suit, but I have undergarments on!'  It's a big no no because you're still in public."

Perhaps the toughest fashion decision to make during a heat wave is what do you wear to the office?

"Dresses.  For sure.  Airy, cotton, dresses."
