Several Feline Myths Revealed

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Completely contrary to the popular myth that felines are distant, independent or solitary creatures, cats certainly can and do express closeness and affection and require the same in return.

Cats are extremely tactile animals. They love to exhibit a close connection and affection to both people and sometimes, other cats. Meowing is reserved solely for human contact and head, body and tail rubbing as well as the paw kneading behavior are true signs of devotion.

Another misconception is that cats can care for themselves on their own if you're gone for several days. This, of course isn't true. Cats like dogs, require fresh water and fresh food on a daily basis. They, too, can suffer from a form of separation anxiety and depression.

Another myth is that cats aren't happy unless they are let outside. Statistics show that indoor cats live almost three times longer than outdoor cats. Cats may be curious, but make no mistake: there is an extremely high risk of injury or death if your cat is led outdoors due to accidents, disease, other animals and dangerous situations. Instead, create a fun and stimulating environment inside with different types of toys and most importantly, your attention.
