West Philadelphia Community Grocery Store Moving To Larger Location

WEST PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A community-owned grocery store in West Philadelphia is gaining some weight.

Mariposa Food Co-op has been operating out of a 500-square foot West Philadelphia storefront since the early 1970's, promoting healthy, locally-grown or otherwise sustainably-produced products.

"We all work shifts at the co-op to keep it running," says Kristen Stoner, who owns and runs the store with the other members.

At the current store, Co-op members agree to work the equivalent of two hours every four weeks.

Another member, Peter Collopy looks forward to moving into the new space in October, a block away, at 4828 Baltimore Avenue that is five times larger.

"We're an organization that's responsive to the needs of our members, therefore to the needs of the community of which we're a part," Collopy said.

Anyone will be able to shop at the new Mariposa, though members will receive a discount.
