Philly Pops Play A Surprise Noontime Concert At Reading Terminal Market

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In an effort to become more visible in these down economic times, Peter Nero and the Philly Pops staged a mini-concert today at the Reading Terminal Market.

Nero (below) and members of the Philly Pops brass section were casually dressed as they took up positions among the crowd and burst into strains of Dixieland.

It was a delightful surprise for folks who had just sat down for lunch.

"We lucked out, sitting here and then the music started," said one woman.  "It was fabulous. I wasn't sure if I recognized the name, and then I thought, yeah, that's who I think it is!"

The music was upbeat and celebratory.  And why not?  Nero was just informed that the Pops received a last-minute funding commitment from the Greater Philadelphia Traditions Fund that will allow its Independence Day weekend concert to go forward on July 3rd.

"We usually do have to wait until the last minute, but this is the closest we've come to the date itself in securing it," said Nero.
