Open Season

This is the week I flex my muscles around the office as the defending champ in the last major's office pool.  Yes, I had Charl Schwartzel to win the Masters.   Never mind that the pool was a blind draw and Schwartzel was among five players given me randomly.   I maintain it was a gutsy selection... don't you agree?  Can't wait to see my five picks for the U.S. Open.  I'm bracing for some payback...  something on the order of Webb Simpson, Fred Funk, and 3 qualifers.  Its a tough crowd in this newsroom.

While the pre-championship buildup has been mostly about Tiger Woods bowing out (and Steve Williams looping for Adam Scott this week) there are some other interesting story lines.   If you're looking for a nice Philly angle, Joe Logan has one for you here at MyPhillyGolf.com -- one of the qualifiers is teaching professional Michael Tobiason from Applecross CC.

Meanwhile, this area's best amateur golfers are getting ready to tee it up tomorrow in the 111th Amateur Championship of the Golf Association of Philadelphia.  Tomorrow, they'll play 18 at Manufacturers G&CC and 18 at North Hills CC.  Then the low 32 finishers will advance to match play at Manny's.  The 36-hole final is set for Saturday.  A complete preview is here at the GAP website.

Looks like they'll have nice weather for it this week.  If you're making plans to tee it up yourself this week, check back tomorrow when we'll list some local deals on golf.

And speaking of deals, if you still have some Father's Day gift shopping to do, you can find some good ones here -- like 40 "at cost" gift items at one major online retailer.
