New Jersey MVC To Extend Hours As Of July

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Starting next month, The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is extending its hours at all state offices. The idea is to meet the needs of customers so they don't have to take off work to get services taken care of.

MVC chair and chief administrator Ramond Martinez says the department had been on an austerity schedule since last year, because of state budget problems. But he says customers have let it be known that they needed more hours to get license renewed, vehicles registered and more.

"We reworked the schedule and this new schedule will go into effect July 2nd," says Martinez. "What we're going to do is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, motor vehicle offices will be open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., so you can either get to the motor vehicle office early at 8 or after work up to 5:30."

The offices will also be open Tuesdays until 7:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Martinez says next year, the agency will begin a new system which will allow drivers to renew licenses on the web.
