3 Family Members Hurt On Atlantic County Amusement Park Ride

EGG HARBOR Twp., N.J. (CBS) -- A popular ride at Storybook Land in Egg Harbor Township has been shut down after three family members were hurt when the ride derailed.

Plenty of families enjoy Storybook Land in South Jersey, but nobody wants to get the phone call that David Young got Sunday.

"I got this call, all of a sudden, from my wife saying that my son, my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law were all being taken to the hospital," said Young.

David Young, who spoke exclusively with Eyewitness News about his families harrowing experience, displayed the heavily bandaged leg of his 19-month-old son Max.

"He's got some bruises and some scrapes, but the major injury was that he wasn't about to walk on his leg yesterday (Sunday)," said Young.

Max sustained the injury when the Big Truck ride at Storybook Land was derailed.

"The monster truck went off of the rails launching him, my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law to the ground."

Egg Harbor Police say all three were in the first car that derailed as it went into a right turn. All three fell about two and a half feet to the ground, they were taken to the hospital.

"The ER did x-rays of him (Max), my mother-in-law, she also got pretty banged up and my sister-in-law was also very hurt, her arm was in a sling."

David tells Eyewitness News that he has not heard from Storybook Land as to what caused the accident. New Jersey's Division of Codes and Standards is investigating.

The park remains open, but the big truck ride is closed until it is deemed safe. It passed an annual inspection in March.

A lawyer representing the park could not be reached for comment.
