Errors Leads To Thousands Of PECO Customers Being Double Charged

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- PECO is asking customers to check their bank statements after an error led to some getting charged twice.

The utility company says 17,000 people who pay by check had their accounts debited again by mistake.

"There was an error by a vendor that processes our payments," said PECO spokeswoman Cathy Engel Menendez.

Engel Menendez says it happened last Thursday. Since then, most of those affected have been credited, and she expects the rest to be refunded today (Monday).

"Any customer that had any sort of overdraft charges or fees because of this, we're going to reimburse them for those charges or fees as well," said Engel Menendez.

Engle Menendez says they're working with that payment processing vendor to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Call 800-494-4000 if you think you have been double charged.
