Pennsylvania State Lawmakers Aim To Deliver On-Time Spending Plan

HARRISBURG (CBS) - The state House and Senate have wrapped up several weeks of budget hearings and leaders from both chambers are predicting a spending plan will be approved on schedule for the first time in years.

Although roiled by deep cuts in the governor's proposed budget, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, Delaware County Republican William Adolph, believes lawmakers will agree on a spending plan before June 30th.

"Absolutely. I think we're all adults here, and we're going to work this out," Adolph said.

During hearings, Adolph says he believes Budget Secretary Charles Zogby indicated a willingness to have a give-and-take with lawmakers on the final shape of the spending plan.

Zogby addressed that during testimony last week.

"I think the governor expects that we'll be engaged with both the House and the Senate on what the final budget would look like,  and we'll see where those discussions lead us," Zogby said.

Expect many of those discussions to center around the desire of lawmakers of both parties to reduce some of the deep cuts to higher education proposed by the governor.
