Philabundance Gets 29,000-Lb. Chicken Donation

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Philadelphia-based anti-hunger organization has received a large donation from a national food processing company.

There was loud applause from the loading dock at the South Philadelphia warehouse of Philabundance as a tractor-trailer from Tyson Foods backed in to unload 29,000 pounds of chicken to help feed the region's hungry.

It's the launch of a nationwide campaign by Tyson -- "Know Hunger" -- to increase hunger awareness in America.

"While they know it's a national problem, people really don't understand how big an issue it is in their own communities," said Bob Corscadden of Tyson. "They can get involved, and there are organizations like Philabundance out there that can help channel their efforts in terms of them being able to help and give back to the community."

Philabundance president Bill Clark (center of top photo) says the donation is much needed.

"The number of people approaching us for support continues to grow," Clark said.  "We're up 20 to 30 percent from last year and the supply of food is not growing."

Especially, he adds, donations of high-protein foods like chicken and meat.
