Some Pennsylvania National Guard Members Warned Of Possible Deployment

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Some 3,700 members of the Pennsylvania National Guard have been given the head's up. They may be going to the Middle East soon for a year-long deployment.

They are part of the 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team which is based in Scranton, but with several units within that team in Philadelphia. They'll spend the next several months getting ready, although tradition suggests only half to two-thirds will actually be deployed to the Middle East early next year.

Major Cory Angell is a Guard spokesman at Fort Indiantown Gap where much of the training will take place.

"Mainly what they will be doing in Kuwait are security operations and force protection," Angell said.

The prep work also involves family members. They are brought up to speed on available services to help them over here as their loved ones serve over there.

The guard members also have to get their personal affairs, such as wills and power of attorney documents, in order -- just in case.
