Defense Rests In Atlantic City Vote Fraud Trial

MAYS LANDING, N.J. (AP) -- The defense in the voter fraud trial of Atlantic City Councilman Marty Small and five other people has rested and the jury is expected to get the case next week.

Small and the others are accused of tampering with absentee ballots designed for those too sick or frail to make it to the polls on Election Day. The charges stem from his unsuccessful run for mayor in the June 2009 Democratic primary.

Small has already been acquitted once before on similar charges stemming from a mayoral election in which he was not a candidate.

With the defense resting Thursday, closing arguments are set for Monday. Six more defendants are due to go on trial on similar charges stemming from the same election once the current trial is over.
