Philadelphia Bike Event For Diabetes Awareness Nears 20th Anniversary

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The call is out for corporate bicycle teams to sign up for a major diabetes fundraiser in June.

It's the 20th year for the "Tour de Cure" -- a bike tour on June 5th around Temple University's Ambler campus to raise awareness and money for the fight against diabetes.

Tour co-chair Joe Cahill, the chief financial officer with Ugmo Technologies in King of Prussia, says the public needs to be involved in causes that matter.

"Diabetes is an epidemic in our country," he notes. "And people need to know about it, and need to know less about whether Lindsay Lohan is going to jail or not."

Andy Mead (in photo), a 32-year-old doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, is a diabetic who won a cross-America race with Team Type 1.

"People can come together, raise some money for diabetes research, and raise some awareness and have a good time," he said on Wednesday.

Mead says that in addition to raising money, the Tour de Cure fights diabetes directly, by getting people to exercise.

To sign up, contact Demetra Lymberis at 610-828-5003 ext. 4658, or go to http://main.diabetes.org/TourdeCurePhilly.
