SEPTA Adding Color Coding To Rail Schedules

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In the next printing of its Regional Rail schedules, SEPTA will be putting color-coded bands across the top of its timetables.

When they dropped the "R" designations last summer (see related story) along with the color schemes for the various lines, the transit agency moved to a blue-grey tint across the board. Septa was hoping that using the end-of-the-line destinations as line designators would clarify the choices, especially for new commuter train riders and tourists.

But Septa's Richard Maloney says feedback from customers has proved useful.

"That (the monochrome design) can present a little confusion to our customers when they're picking up a schedule at the station.  Now, each line will have an individual color," Maloney says.  "This is the only place that they'll see the color designation -- as well as on our web site."

They'll be doing 13 different colors by mid-March, says Maloney -- one for each Regional Rail line. The Paoli line, for example, will have a green band on the printed timetables in station racks; the Media line will be blue.

Maloney says Septa has no plans to reintroduce "R" numbers or change signage colors on the trains, at stations, or anywhere else.
