U of Sciences, Penn Celebrate Milestones This Week
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Two Philadelphia universities are celebrating milestones this week.
On Thursday, the University of the Sciences will celebrate Founders' Day - the 190th anniversary of the founding of North America's first pharmacy college. University President Dr. Philip Gerbino says there was a time when apothecary was thought to be more an art than a science.
"But the folks that founded our institution believed that science was the basis of all professions and so our 68 apothecaries kind of split off, met together, and decided that the apothecary arts, the art of the recipe, the art of the prescription, was one that had science as its basis."
Also, 60 years ago this week was the birth of the modern computer era with the development of ENIAC, the first general purpose electronic computer at the University of Pennsylvania.
