Cherry Hill Mall Visitors Get Surprise Performance

CHERRY HILL, NJ (CBS) - Shoppers may get annoyed when they get sprayed with cologne as they walk through a cosmetics department but Cherry Hill mall visitors were charmed on Sunday by a shot of 'Hairspray.'

It was Hairspray the Musical performed, without warning, by the cast of Cherry Hill West high school's production, which will open next week.

Principal Joe Meloche says it was part publicity stunt and part just showing off.

"It was just a great opportunity for the kids to come out and show their talent and their ability with the community," Meloche said.

When asked, the young performers said they had a great time performing. "It was really fun," one girl said. "I enjoy singing but (performing) in front of people in the mall was really fun."

Another girl said it was a unique experience. "I thought it was awesome because you never get to have something like this happen, and to have everyone watching you, it just felt so good."

In truth, most of the people milling about when the kids broke into song were proud parents who knew what was coming. Still, they were impressed. One parent said they did what he wouldn't be able to do. "I would be scared to death to do that, but they did a really good job."
