Know Your Options Before Booking Winter Flights, Says Expert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's winter.  And that means a good chance your airline flight could be canceled because of bad weather.  What do you do then?

If you're trying to fly in bad weather, arm yourself with information, advises Martha Meade, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Sign up for your airline's text alerts so that you get first word of a cancellation, she says.  That'll give you a jump on rebooking.

And if you're buying travel insurance, Meade says to make sure you know what it covers.

"Different policies cover different things.  Weather is a very tricky one.  So if you want to make sure that you're covered in the event of an ice storm because you're traveling at this time of year, you need to make sure when you buy that policy, that that clause is included," Meade told KYW Newsradio today.

She says it also helps to read your airline's policy on cancellations, and know what compensation you may be entitled to.
