Make 2011 A Better Year For Your Pet

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - With the new year rapidly approaching, it's time to start thinking about new starts, better, healthier ideas and of course resolutions to put them all in place. This year, include your pets to create a healthier lifestyle for them as well.

Make it a point to reevaluate their diet. Is it healthy and nutrient rich; does the ingredient list start with only fillers and by-products? Do your research and begin a healthy diet for them this year.

Keep up with their routine visits to the vet and have them groomed on occasion to maintain a healthy shiny coat. Begin an exercise routine on a daily basis that includes a good daily walk. It will be beneficial for both of you. Maybe even enroll in a training class. Make sure all collars and ID tags are up to date. Keep any unsafe or hazardous items or chemicals out of reach. Do a safety check around your home to make sure that it's pet-proof.

Think of the less fortunate animals this year too by donating money, needed objects or even your time to a local shelter. Or consider adopting this year.

Most importantly, resolve to spend more quality time with your companion animal. You will receive so much in return.
